Florence Rose interview by Helena Handbag

Where are you from?

London.

What do you do?

I’m a musician (singer and guitarist), director and model.

Describe your music in five words.

Haunting, feminine, distant, animalistic, ethereal.

What’s the greatest gig you’ve ever played?

My first show in London, at a venue called Folklore. There were so many beautiful faces of friends, family and sweet girls in the crowd.

What’s your favourite food?

Crisps, unfortunately. Not very chic.

Do you have a backstage ritual?

Shaking my body, and jumping up and down like crazy.

Why?

A vocal coach once told me to move my body before I start singing. It’s a lot more physical than I’d realised, going from always singing at home, trying not to disturb anyone.

What’s your favourite music magazine?
Uh, it has to be BEAT.

What’s the best thing a fan has given you?

A single white feather.

Who’s your number one crush?

Cate Blanchett.

And your number two?
My boyfriend.

What’s the last text you sent?
“Meowwwwww.”

What do you always have in your bag?

Ibuprofen and lip gloss <3

How many glasses of water do you drink a day?

Six or seven – it’s good to be hydrated.

If you could time-travel to any gig, what would it be?

Hole or Björk in the 1990s.

It’s been a Brat summer, but what kind of winter will we have?

Depression winter – so Nick Drake, Elliot Smith… This is just my all-year-round rotation.

What’s your favourite piece of trivia?

I’m a nerd about Goldfrapp’s first album, Felt Mountain. I love that they made a track to sound like a “wolf being whipped in this little Tudor house overlooking a snowy landscape”. I know a lot of trivia about this album.

What are two of your favourite albums?
Roman Candle by Elliott Smith, and Chet Baker Sings.

When can we next see you live, and what have you got coming up in 2025?

I’m working on new music. I’m moving away from “digital”, with more guitar music, and softer, more melancholic and personal songwriting.

Is social media as important as everyone makes out?

No! It will never be as important as what’s in front of us. It is fun, though; I can’t say it’s all bad.
